Ballad for The Tower
2022
Bachelor’s Graduation Project, Hamidrasha Faculty of The Arts Beit Berl College
Mixed media installation
This project began when I moved out of my parent’s home to Beit Berl. Beit Berl is an educational institutional settlement, built upon the grounds of the “Kalmania” farm, established by the socialist Zionist Labor Movement “Mapai”. The fields surrounding the institution are connected to the abandoned fields surrounding my family’s neighborhood, but function as active agriculture fields contaminated with agricultural and industrial waste.
I began wandering around these fields, collecting the deserted objects I encountered. One of these objects was an abandoned tower (“Ha-Migdal”) with which I developed a one-sided love affair. What initially began as scavenger hunts in historical territories, evolved into courting sessions, where I attempted to capture the tower and make it mine. Unsuccessfully, I turned to collecting representations of the tower, portraying it through ink drawings, photographs, and videos.
Finally, assembled in the exhibition space, the portraits and collected objects were placed according to their inherent relationships, spanning three areas:
1. The Insulation area, where the short film “Genesis” was screened, echoing throughout the exhibition space.
2. The Fountain area, surrounded by sand, serving as a threshold barrier between the main entrance and the fabricated world.
3. The Greenhouse area, functioning as an internal capsule, showcasing the video art “Agricultural”.
Periodically, a performance was held, featuring an outfit made of objects marked by the “Rishonim” road trail mark, connecting historical Zionist sites in Kfar Saba.
The exhibition space and its artifacts served as relics, establishing an alternate realm encapsulating the unrequited love affair with the Migdal.
